AI
Professional
In my professional life, I follow the AI policy of my employer, the KB National Library of the Netherlands.
My image policy follows the guidelines of the Better Images of AI project. The guide behind this excellent website is worth reading.
My work follows Seven Principles of AI in the Library. Use of AI should be:
- Accessible
- Robust
- Inclusive
- Neutral
- Human-in-the-Loop
- Transparent
- Safe
My personal approach is that generative AI should be used sparingly in ethically sound use cases. I do not use generative AI when it is unnecessary, and I focus on making careful and informed interventions. I believe that Large Language Models rearrange and parrot words back to us from a vast corpus of black box training data of questionable ethical provenance. This makes LLMs excellent at certain proscribed tasks. They are not intelligent, they are not universally useful, and they are never unproblematic to use.
Creative
I am a creative academic and Tabletop Roleplaying Game writer, and in my creative work I subscribe to the Human Made movement. My creative projects do not involve generative AI in any aspect of their creation. This is a personal decision to focus on the enjoyment that I derive from the process of creation, and a respect for the autonomy and labour of creatives.
